The Death of Ancient Israel Only (preterism) - Dr. Richard Carrier

The ‘Israel Only’ hypothesis is a framework for interpreting the New Testament exclusively through the lens of the Hebrew Bible on which it’s based. According to this unconventional theory, the New Testament consists of an eschatological narrative depicting the in-gathering of the Lost Tribes of Israel, who were dispersed among the nations. It proposes a major paradigm shift from the traditional view that Paul was on a mission to convert so-called ‘Gentiles’ who had no ancestral connection to the twelve tribes of Israel. But will this hermeneutic stand up to scrutiny by qualified scholars?

Mythvision Podcast is a freethought platform that approaches all religious texts and belief systems with an open mind. No theory is off limits, including ‘Israel Only’, which is a particularly interesting subject for much of MythVision’s audience. And we’ve finally managed to commission a bona fide scholar to properly investigate the hypothesis in detail - Dr. Richard Carrier.

Dr. Carrier holds a Ph.D. in Ancient History from Columbia University. He’s a prolific author known for his publications on early Christianity and the historicity of Jesus. Shortly after earning his Ph.D., Dr. Carrier was conscripted to investigate the work of Earl Doherty, who posited that Jesus of Nazareth may not have existed as a historical figure. Initially, Carrier was skeptical of Doherty’s thesis, believing the consensus view (that a historical Jesus most likely existed). But, after conducting a thorough investigation, he reversed his opinion and became a staunch advocate of ‘Jesus Mythicism’.

In a similar fashion, Mythvision has hired Dr. Carrier to conduct thorough research into the ‘Israel Only’ hypothesis, with an open mind and with the goal of arriving wherever the evidence leads him. As an atheist, he brings no religious baggage to the table. But, a thorough analysis is inevitably going to require a significant amount of time for research. ‘Israel Only’ is a theory that deserves a great deal attention to detail. And Dr. Carrier is committed to leaving no stone unturned in his investigation.
