Old Comrades - Gaudin - Gavioli 105 Key Fairground Organ

Arr: Paul Eynard. The organ was a `Gavioliphone` 110 key (s/n 432) before being altered by Gaudin et Cie to 105 key, and is now in Marseille at the "Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée, Mar (MuCEM)" http://www.mucem.org/ ~ see more below.

A monumental organ indeed, (Original serial 432, 110 touches) with a sculpted, moulded wooden façade painted in pastel colors (pink, water green, blue) enhanced with gilded paint. It is composed of several insert parts. The buffet, the main part of the organ, is composed of a piece of wooden furniture, accommodating the various pipes and the system of bellows, thus forming the instrument as such. Inside the instrument, moving parts, violins fit into the extreme left and right of the sideboard. The instruments bellows was originally steam-driven. It was electrified in 1970. An electrical system is visible on the right side of the sideboard and a motor is fitted underneath. On the reverse of the sideboard, on the right, a wheel embedded on a large iron rod, is part of the system of actuating bellows, located at the bottom. Numerous disassembled elements relating to the main part are retained, notably pipes but also structural elements. In front of the buffet, a group sculpted in round bump, placed on a wooden base is painted pastel colors. Behind the sculptured group are two corner panels in carved wood with carved decorations and painted landscapes, side by side, in front of the sideboard, forming the lower part of the framing. At the upper lateral angles of these two panels are placed two large wooden angels carved and painted. The angel on the left raises his left arm and the angel on the right, his right arm. Placed thus, they frame and open their arms on the instrument behind them. Two carved and painted wooden sconces are placed under the angels, on the cornice of the panels and 4 and support sculptured calyces. Two cut and painted wood studs fit into the 4 panels and form the upper part of the frame. A painted wooden cartridge is placed under the assembly of these two panels, above the central part of the sideboard. Recessed above the cornice of the uprights, stands the pediment of the organ composed of a central part, surmounted by a cartouche indicating a date. These last two elements are supported by a large square in plywood on the reverse. The cartouche is framed by two small angels carved and painted. The pediment is bordered on both sides by painted panels, embedded above the cornice of the panels. They are also held by wooden brackets which were placed on the roof of the buffet. The instrument and its façade have two large lateral uprights, each with a sculptured, painted wooden facade opening onto musical instruments (drums, triangles, cymbals, tymbals). Finally, adding to the decor, a multitude of colored bulbs, screw on the brass sleeves, located on the whole facade: on the frame, fronton and inside the main part. Before its electrification, it operated with steam. It has one hundred and forty pipes operated by a pneumatic system, one hundred and five keys, one hundred and twenty-three registers, thirty-two notes for singing (melody), twenty-five notes for backing vocals, twelve accompanying notes plus twelve notes for the bass. It is entirely chromatic and has a total range of about five octaves which allows all kinds of restitution, adaptations of air "in fashion", and musical creations very varied. The effects produced are those of bass, acoustic bass, bombard, trombone, English horn, slide trombone, saxophone, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, cello, cornet, 1st and 2nd violins, viola da gamba, viola alto, flute, baritone, horn, bassoon, clarinet, small clarinet, oboe, musette, bugle, flute, The flageolet, the pan flute, the piccolo, the rolling case, the orchestral timpani, the bass drum, the cymbal, the castanet. It is a pneumatic instrument equipped with a key box that receives "orders" thanks to a musical program noted on perforated cardboard strips, the key box itself transmitting the information to all Mouthpieces of a keyboard which acts on the pipes and on various organs such as drums and percussions as well as the automatic registration, including triggering of the automatons if necessary................... Thank`s to my friend Leroux for this information.
