Eggshell Fertilizer + Banana Peel - Potassium & Calcium for Tomatoes & Peppers in Your Garden
Banana Peel and Eggshell Fertilizer - Potassium and Calcium for Tomato & Pepper Plants with Vitamix
Here is a link for the Vitamix I use (much cheaper than most but it does a great job): http://amzn.to/2d9HXDN
In this episode, I will show you how I make my own eggshell and banana peel organic vegetable garden fertilizer to provide extra calcium and potassium to my tomato and pepper plants.
Regardless of where your plants are, in a container or in your garden, this is a great way to supply them with organic calcium and potassium for cheap.
Calcium is important for plants in your organic vegetable garden because it prevents blossom end rot, which is the browning on the bottom of your fruit where the blossom used to be.
Whenever I eat eggs, I save the shells and make sure to wash them well so they don't smell. After I wash the eggshells, I would place them outside in the sun and let them dry out for a few hours. When dry, I would store them in the refrigerator until I'm ready to make my fertilizer. During the cold days (very rear in Arizona), I would store them in a plastic bag in the freezer until it's time to add some extra calcium fertilizer to my tomato and pepper plants.
Potassium is important for the plants in your organic vegetable garden because it makes them more resistant to pests, it helps them develop a healthy root system and it prevents the uneven ripening of the fruit.
Just like with eggshells, whenever I eat bananas, I would let the banana peels sit outside until completely dry and crunchy.
Whenever I'm ready to transplant my plants in to my organic vegetable garden, I put 50/50 ratio of banana peels and eggshells into my Vitamix and blend them for about 45 second or until the consistency is the same as the consistency of powdered sugar. Then, I would add a tablespoon in each planting hole and mix it with the soil before I put my tomato or pepper plant in it.
I always make sure to water my plants with Epsom salt water because it betters their ability to absorb the calcium from the soil. I mix 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt in 1 gallon of water and repeat the process every 2 weeks.
I also store my banana peels fresh in the freezer to add to a pitcher of water for watering my tomato and pepper seedlings and plants. I make sure to let the banana peels soak for 24 hours in the pitcher of water at room temperature and water the plants (or bottom water my seedlings) the next day.
