Exposure Compensation: How to Master it Under 4 Minutes

One of the handiest features on your camera is exposure compensation.

The exposure compensation feature allows you to quickly brighten or darken the image. There are two primary uses for brightening or darkening a photo in this way - first, to correct for exposure mistakes made by the camera, and second, to purposefully overexpose or underexpose an image.

Though your camera’s metering system strives to get the exposure just right, it can be fooled into thinking a scene is brighter or darker than it actually is. That means some input from you to brighten or darken the shot might be needed. That’s where exposure compensation comes in.

You can also use exposure compensation to purposefully over or underexpose a photo. Why would you want to do that?

Perhaps you want a high-key portrait (which is overexposed). Maybe you want to create a dark and gloomy vibe in a landscape photo of a forest. The possibilities are endless for manipulating the exposure to fulfill your creative vision.

Fortunately, you can use exposure compensation in a variety of different camera settings, like aperture priority, shutter priority, and program modes. If you aren’t familiar with these modes, no worries - I’ll explain each in the video as well as how exposure compensation works with each mode.

But if you shoot in full auto mode, you’ll be disappointed. Since the camera controls all the exposure elements when in full auto, exposure compensation isn’t an option.

You don’t have to be intimidated by exposure compensation though - just check out this video, learn all about what it is and how to use it, and you’ll be much more prepared to get well-exposed photos each and every time!
