President Donald Trump on Sunday joined progressive lawmakers in calling for another round of stimulus checks "right now" in his final weeks in office. A group of bipartisan lawmakers unveiled a $908 billion compromise measure earlier this month in an effort to end the stimulus stalemate that's been ongoing for over five months but the problem is that this bill doesn’t include direct stimulus checks. However, Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent, and five progressive Democrats in the upper chamber quickly opposed the framework for excluding another round of direct payments and they proposed another bill that would include $1200 checks. Trump joined their calls for stimulus checks as the pandemic worsened in most parts of the country this weekend. And in a interview on Sunday Fox News, president trump said that “right now, I want to see checks–for more money than they're talking about–going to people," He went on to say that “he is pushing it very hard, and how if the Democrats really wanted to do the deal, they'd do the deal."

The bipartisan group of House and Senate negotiators that has struggled to finalize a $908 billion stimulus relief package finally made a decision on Sunday. They decided to split the package into two separate proposals. One bill will be a $748 billion proposal, which includes money for small business loans, jobless benefits and vaccine distribution -- among other matters. And the other package would include $160 billion for state and local aid that includes liability protections for businesses and other entities -- the two biggest sticking points. Currently, it’s uncertain how many senators and House members from the group will sign onto the second proposal, but the expectation is the first proposal will have wide support.

Six senators were holding calls Sunday afternoon to try to reach an accord on the issue after struggling for weeks. Louisiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union that “they’re going to introduce a bill tomorrow night," He explained how “the leadership can discard it, and he can't govern that but he does think the bill will have a lot of bipartisan support. Bottom line is that he said “there will be a deal,"

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke for a half hour Sunday afternoon while Pelosi continued to press for state and local aid and asked for changes to how the liability protections have been proposed by Republicans. Nancy Pelosi’s spokesperson, drew hammier tweet yesterday that “the Speaker believes, at a time when the virus is surging, that the need for state and local funding is even more important, especially given the states' responsibility for distributing and administering the vaccine," He went on to say that "Health care workers and first responders are risking their lives to save lives and at the same time, are at the risk of losing their jobs without state and local support." On top of this Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has signaled willingness to drop state and local aid in stimulus talks to end the congressional stalemate and deliver quick relief to struggling Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
