Hundreds of people took place in the traditional Bolivian 'Tinku' festival with participants engaged in violent brawls, as filmed in Macha on Tuesday.

The word translates as 'violent encounter' from Aymara, a Native American language spoken in the Andes region.

Members of more than 100 communities visited the event which pays homage to the their ancestors.

Organisers say the tradition allows participants to 'sort out' conflicts between themselves bringing peace to the community at least until the next festival.

SOT, Severo Tesillo, Community member (Spanish): "This festival is held every year. It is a custom. Each community has an intern, and they come to the party on May 3, as a custom in Northern Potosi."

SOT, Severo Tesillo, Community member (Spanish): "In the past, the grandparents created this tradition, and we follow the customs of our grandparents."

SOT, Vidal Marka, Community member (Spanish): "It is like having fun once a year. It's our tradition, of our ancestors that dates back to a long time ago, that tends to disappear."

SOT, Vidal Marka, Community member (Spanish): "Slowly we are loosing our traditions, and we want to honor them, and it's like a sport."
