Crossing the Southern Ocean in an Ice Breaker | A Year in Antarctica (2009)

The expedition begins. I remember having mixed feelings about these first few days. After 6 months of training and preparation, I was excited to at last be on the move, but I was also a little apprehensive about about the year ahead. The weather however, would prove to be a helpful distraction in this regard. As we moved further south conditions slowly deteriorated and the Southern Ocean lived up to its wild reputation.

One of the drawbacks of being in an icebreaker like the Aurora Australis is that they're great for breaking ice, but due to a lack of keel, not so good when it comes to handling rough seas. It was no surprise that the ship and everyone on it, were a lot happier when the first ice bergs were sighted, an indication that the swell-dampening benefits of the Antarctic pack ice were not too far away.
