A spriteful poetic work of romanticism about nature, love and death, published in 1922. Rilke was inspired by poetic hymns of Hölderlin, 'the most German of Germans', and so this work likely represents the mentality of living in prewar Germany — and to me resembles the general unease with technology and politics removing people from nature. This work may reflect the damage subjective reason had on romanticism as a movement prior to when Nazis obtained power. This is a brilliant example of German poetry, as a classic it holds up Romanticism against German idealism.
Come find me on GoodReads, where I try to review every book that I read, primarily as a reminder for my future self.
