Wood flooring installation. How to lay out prior to nailing.
1. Starting with the focal point in the room that needs to look straight you establish your beginning boards. measuring and looking at the room.
2. Lay appropriate paper on the floor, typically red paper, thin black paper, or thicker black tar paper which we're using in this case.
3. Start building your "stairs" pattern layout by separating out the longest down to the shortest of the boards. laying the longest first, then subsequently smaller keeping approximately 6 in space between the board ends.
4. once the stairs have been established. take a grouping of the longest and medium-sized boards laying them similarly to butt up to the stair layout. there should be no boards lining up at their butt ends to their neighbors. you need to maintain approximately a 6-in gap between all butt ends. No butt ends should line up from any boards that are within five planks from each other. it just looks bad.
5. continue this process to the end of the room adjusting your layout watching out for the butt ends. at the end of the room, turn the final board that reaches the wall filling the gap. by turning the sport you can draw a line and make this cut. When you install this board you will be turning it back around so it fits into the tongue and groove properly.
This is the basic method for how to lay out random length flooring. Every job has its own needs. These principles apply regardless. Feel free to contact me for advice :-)
Make sure you wear knee pads and gloves! the splinters are horrible, and your knees will need it! Kneeling on the end of one board will quickly teach you why. Have fun, play music, and be patient. it doesn't go fast. Those that do it fast don't do it well.
