In this video I will try to explain the difference between Belarusian and Russian languages. I will cover the alphabet, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.

Let's start with the alphabet. In the Belarusian language there 2 versions of the alphabet: cyrillic and latin. In this video we will consider only the cyrillic version because the difference will look more obvious. In Belarusian there is a letter "ў", while in Russian there is "ъ", "щ". Also the same sound is expressed in Belarusian as "і", while in Russian it's "и".

The comparison of Belarusian and Russian grammar we will start with orthography because here the difference between Belarusian and Russian languages looks more obvious. The main principle of Belarusian is "I write what I hear", which is not the case for Russian.

There 3 genders in both languages: Feminine, Masculine and Neuter. In the vast majority of cases they are the same, but there are some exceptions. Same situation with countings.

There are 6 cases in both languages and the logic of declension is the same. However, the endings of nouns can be different.

Verbs in both languages have 3 tenses, 2 countings and 3 persons.

The next chapter where we can see the difference between Belarusian and Russian languages is pronunciation. We will consider [г], [ч], [ў], [р], "дзеканне, цеканне", [c] [з] when they become soft.

The last and probably the most important and controversial part is the comparison of Belarusian and Russian vocabulary. You can give examples when Belarusian and Russian languages are totally different and when they are almost the same. I will provide some simple phrases and also some practical examples as well where you can measure the difference between Belarusian and Russian languages.
