Birdshot Home Defense Gel Test

Many are the claims from bird shot enthusiasts regarding the use of these tiny pellets for home defense. The theory is that these shells provide a very high amount of energy transfer and potentially incapacitating tissue damage at short ranges while minimizing the risk of injuring loved ones or neighbors through over-penetration of the target or by missed shots traveling through interior and/or exterior walls.

We fire #8 and #4 bird shot each:
- through two interior walls and onto a "silhouette"
- into pork ribs and pork shoulder in front of drywall
- through an interior wall and into gelatin

BONUS FOOTAGE: #8 cut shell into gelatin!

Note, even bird shot fans rarely suggest small-caliber shot is reliably physically incapacitating to an animal or human attacker beyond 25-30 feet. Indeed there seems to be much anecdotal evidence to discredit bird shot's use beyond very short ranges for this purpose. (Remember, many people believe it is not suitable at any range.)

*This video gives no insight into to the "stopping power" or "safety" of 12 gauge bird shot for use in any scenario. Looking for a home defense ammunition that's right for you? The results seen here are merely a curiosity. They are neither scientific nor informative.
