Once upon a Line (1947) | BFI National Archive

Size isn't everything, as these "model husbands" are out to prove. The portable miniature railway – big enough to ride on but small enough to fit in the back of a car – is a long-running obsession of the dedicated train hobbyist. As this light-hearted (but sadly incomplete) documentary shows, reference to their full-size counterparts is all important. In the year that the Transport Act nationalised all train companies, this was the stress free way to run a railway.
