Unraveling the life of a core

How are cores taken? How do scientists gain data from these rocks and sediments? And what happens to the cores after an expedition? This documentary shows the exciting journey of hard rock cores: the drilling process, core description, the sampling and finally the archiving in the IODP core repository.

It provides an insight on the core flow during an IODP expedition – in this case Expedition 364 “Chicxulub K-PG Impact Crater”. The film shows the drilling into the Chicxulub impact crater in the Gulf of Mexico (April/May 2016) and the processes during the Onshore Science Party (September/October 2016) at MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen.

This documentary was created as a project work by Geoscience Student Lara Jacobi supported by the Public Relations Team of MARUM.

The expedition was conducted by the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) as part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). The expedition is also supported by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Programme (ICDP). The expedition would not have been possible without the support and assistance of the Yucatán Government, Mexican federal government agencies and scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Centro de Investigación Científica de Yucatán (CICY).
