Elgar - CARISSIMA - 1st performance in his 1st recording session.
Alice Elgar recorded this as happening on 20 January 1914, though that may be wrong since HMV have it on 21 January. Elgar seemed enthusiastic to try out the new technology, and he agreed that his newly written piece Carissima should be recorded. This makes the recording the work's première.
The photograph was taken on the day, and Alice recorded that "After lunch he went ... to hear the orchestra play Carissima for Gramophone. Much amused. Was photographed. Do TRUST Carissima will be a great success".
Elgar's recorded legacy is large - about 20 well-filled LPs - and he was almost certainly the first established composer to take the gramophone seriously. His last session, supervised from his sick-bed, was almost exactly 20 years later, on 22 January 1934.
