He Was Blind… And He Invented Cruise Control

This is one of the most mind blowing stories in automotive history. Ralph Teetor could not see the road, yet he invented cruise control. It began with a car ride where the driver kept changing speed without realising it. Teetor designed Speedostat to control the throttle and hold a constant speed. Patent granted on August 22, 1950. Chrysler debuted it in 1958 on the Imperial as Auto Pilot, and Cadillac helped make cruise control the popular name. Today, its core logic lives inside adaptive cruise control and many ADAS features.
