Artist Amina Agueznay on Asǝṭṭa, Morocco's installation for 2026 Venice Biennale

On April 1, 2026, a team of media people including myself, visited the atelier of veteran Moroccan artist Amina Agueznay in Marrakech to hear more about the installation for Morocco's first national pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2026.

Designed specifically for the Arsenale’s Artiglierie, Asǝṭṭa by artist Amina Agueznay and curated by Meriem Berrada, explores the transmission of traditional craftsmanship and shared memory. The work centres on the symbolism of thresholds, echoing the theme of this edition, In Minor Keys, chosen by Koyo Kouoh.

Following extensive field research across Morocco, in collaboration with diverse and exceptionally skilled artisans (mostly women), the monumental installation reflects the connection to the land, gestures, and voices that shape and sustain Morocco’s artisanal traditions. It bridges the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art, resulting in a piece that honours a wide range of ancestral techniques with a profoundly modern perspective.
