TDD vs TLD — Feedback Loops

Most people would agree regarding the key benefit of test automation: self-testing code. But the question is, should tests be written before or after code – Test Driven Development (TDD) vs Test Last Development (TLD)? Furthermore, should the tests and code be written incrementally, or can they be written in batches, what's the difference? We will explore the impact of TDD and TLD on the feedback loops - how tests provide us feedback regarding requirement testability, the quality of our interface design, and implementation correctness, as well as how tests provide a safety net for refactoring.
