How is this poultry farm generating enough electricity to power 350 homes?

An anaerobic digester is like a concrete cow stomach. Materials fed into the digester (in the Mears’ case, these materials are maize and rye silage, but they can also include animal waste, which is used at operations like Fiscalini Farms) are broken down by bacteria and converted into methane. The methane is then run through a generator that turns it into electricity. However, Wood Farm only uses about 10% of this electricity. The rest is provided to local villages and helps power close to 350 houses.

In addition to free electricity, the Mears are left with a digestate material, which is composted to create a nutrient-rich mulch they spread on their crops and sell to local farmers and gardeners.
