SHELLY MANNE SEPTET - Pooch McGooh [from 10-inch vinyl Shelly Manne Septet Vol. 2]
"Pooch McGooh" (often spelled "Pooch McGooch") is a jazz track recorded by the Shelly Manne Septet in 1952. It originally appeared on the 10-inch LP Shelly Manne Vol. 2, which was released in 1954 by Contemporary Records.
The piece was written by Shorty Rogers, a prominent figure in the West Coast jazz scene.
Recording Date: It was recorded on December 18, 1951, in Hollywood.
The Septet Lineup: According to Fresh Sound Records and Discogs, the septet for this specific session included:
Drums (Leader): Shelly Manne.
Trumpet: Shorty Rogers.
Trombone: Bill Russo.
Alto Saxophone: Art Pepper.
Tenor Saxophone: Bob Cooper.
Baritone Saxophone: Jimmy Giuffre.
Piano: Gene Esposito.
Bass: Don Bagley.
The performance on Shelly Manne Vol. 2 is considered a "definitive statement" of West Coast jazz. It features adventurous, tight arrangements and an unusual septet lineup that blended brass power with intimate, "cool" sonorities.
I do not own the copyright to the music, the recording and the photos. (Image post and video art were appropriated from the original album.) This video is posted for educational use under Section 17 U.S. Code § 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use.
All posts are rendered in old school using restored vinyl LPs. This channel does not use recordings from CDs. As much as possible, I attempted to remove most of the pops and crackles from the original vinyl album. Some remastering was applied to make the performance cut through within the confines of the loudness wars.
Hope you enjoy.
