Have you ever wondered how paints were made in the Middle Ages? Every color in a medieval manuscript was created by hand using pigments from minerals like lapis lazuli for ultramarine blue, from plants, from insects, and even from lichen to make purple orchil. In the early Middle Ages, scribes ground and prepared paints themselves, but by the 13th century, ready made ingredients could be bought from an apothecary or a stationer as manuscript production became more commercial.
