Mercedes diesel EGR valve removal

How to remove a Mercedes EGR valve (or not), in this case to a C Class C220 diesel.

Advice: slacken the retaining bolts, warm the engine, rev it hard and let boost pressure do the work for you. Secondary advice: you do this all at your own risk!

Update: the puff of black smoke turned out to be caused by a cheap engine remap. A leaking injector on this cars usually makes itself obvious by a smell of exhaust in the engine compartment and the signs of soot near the offending injector.
