i24NEWS DESK | Hundreds of avid supporters and adamant objectors of Israel’s caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gathered outside the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem on Sunday ahead of the trial opening.
It will be the first time in Israel’s history that a serving prime minister attends a criminal trial. Netanyahu was indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of public trust -- which he vehemently denies all allegations of wrongdoing.
The demonstrators later made way for the Jerusalem District Court to remain outside the courthouse as the trial began at 3 pm (Israel Summer Time), Hebrew-language outlet N12 reported.
The protesters were divided into two groups: The “Black Flags” movement which held signs reading “crime minister” with Netanyahu’s photo; and Netanyahu supporters who were calling on Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, who indicted the premier, to resign as “the people are the sovereign.”
The attacks against Mendelblit come after politicians’ remarks rose to seething heights, with chairman of the coalition and Likud lawmaker, Miki Zohar, claimed the trial was conspired the Israeli police, the prosecution, the media and “the left”, in order to put Netanyahu on the defendants’ bench, according to N12.
