I made my boyfriend (I call him bao) a cryptex for our second anniversary! For more details about my journey making this cyptex, you can visit my Instagram page (link down below), where I documented and organised each step I took in my highlights.

The design was inspired by the Da Vinci Code cryptex design and I put it together following a tutorial made by
aPasos Crafts DIY
(https://bit.ly/2M3qgIB). I also made the cardboard box from scratch and painted it to look like wood. For the wood grain effect, I followed a tutorial made by Creatures of Nat (https://bit.ly/2YTqffu).

In the original tutorial, aPasos Crafts DIY used a Pringles can and cut it up to make the different segments. Me, being lazy, not-so-confident about my cutting skills and not keen on finishing a can of Pringles just for this (think about washing out the grease too), decided to use cardboard tape cores instead (the cardboard cores you get after you finish a roll of tape).

It wasn't so hard to get my hands on several tape cores because my mother has a packing department at her workplace that use up tape pretty quickly. Plus, it's always nice to make things from 'garbage'! #reuse For those who know me, they know that I am always looking to create beautiful things using the least amount of new resources. All a part of my decluttering plan!

I borrowed acrylic paints from a friend who used to take art back in secondary school and has a bunch of leftovers, and sponged on the paint onto the cardboard to create a metallic look. I also sponged on some black paint on the edges of each tumbler (the parts you turn) to give them an aged metal look.

For the alphabets, I first printed out the words I need in reverse and traced them over the shimmery matte gold cardstock using carbon paper so each letter look as close to the original font as possible.

For the symbols on the cylindrical ends of the cryptex, I used Mod Podge/PVA glue. I found that Mod Podge gave a better effect for the raise of each symbol, but that could be because my Mod Podge is pretty old and the PVA glue I used was newer and hence more watery.
