HOW TO START STORE BOUGHT GINGER AT HOME | Propagating GINGER and other ROOTS and HERBS
Did you know you could sprout ginger root from your local grocery store and grow it in your garden this season? You can! But you should probably start soon, because it takes 8-12 weeks to get it going indoors, and it usually needs 9-11 months outside in the ground/or pots. This isn’t just for southern growers either, I grew ginger for 2 years while living in NY in zone 6. Zones 5 and under can still grow ginger but may benefit from growing in pots and bringing their ginger plants indoors for the winter.
I’ve grown ginger (and tumeric) 4 times now over the years and it is such an amazing plant to propagate at home. Unless you want to grow a specialty variety of ginger (the flesh comes in yellow, orange and even blue!), you do not need to buy expensive seed ginger from a seed supplier (it can be pricey and hard to find locally). Since it’s very easy to obtain non organic store bought ginger and sprout it at home, that’s what I recommend for first time ginger growers. It’s an easy plant to care for and the harvests are delicious. Whether you’ll use it for culinary or medicinal uses, it’s a plant worth giving some garden space to. It makes a wonderful companion plant as well.
This is my favorite method of starting ginger at home. I also show a few other vegetables and herbs we are propagating at the moment. See how I sprout sweet potato slips, and store bought herbs in this video. With a few tips I’ve learned along the way.
**Hi, I’m Candice. I’m a native NY’er with an awesome husband and 3 children, now living on 2.1 acres in East Tennessee. In 2021 our family renovated our home, sold it, then moved 900 miles away from everyone and everything we’ve ever known to peruse a free’er life in a new state. We love East TN and are excited to expand our little homestead one step at a time. If you follow our channel, you can watch it grow, and follow along all the other things we are learning to do. You can find me in the kitchen making sourdough, fermenting everything from Sauerkraut to making milk kefir and Kombucha. The next big project of mine is to build the 2024 garden space.
We’d love to have you along for the ride!**
