I recorded this video almost a year ago now, while I was dealing with extreme self hatred and guilt. I can see it on my face as I edited this video, I was really struggling. I’m still struggling, but not in the same ways. Old me was trying their best, just like I am today. And taking little steps, day by day, I am slowly finding ways to be happy and fulfilled.
In the video, I share three ways I practice tackling my challenges head on and not letting avoidance set in:
One: Keeping a to-do list of important tasks related to my mental, physical and spiritual health. This allows me to see tangible progress, and remember things important for my well being.
Two: Anti-avoidance. Using my avoidance as a tool to steer me in the right direction. If I feel like I want to avoid something, I ask myself why. Why can’t I do dishes? Why can’t I text that person back? Go towards that feeling and try an awkward hug. It’s just your brain trying to keep you safe. Use your fear to guide you in a new direction.
Three: Take action. Stop spiraling, thought-ing, thinking. While thinking is good, it's not worth much without some action. What is one thing you can do right now? Do that thing and give yourself a genuine pat on the back.
