Alaknanda: Milky Way–Twin from 12 Billion Years Ago

✨ Meet Alaknanda a spiral galaxy that existed 12 billion years ago and looks like our Milky Way.

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope discovered this “grand-design” spiral, complete with arms and a bright central bulge something we did not expect so early in cosmic history.

Alaknanda formed when the Universe was only about 1.5 billion years old, yet it already had tens of billions of stars and a stable disk structure.
This challenges our models of galaxy formation clearly the early Universe was more efficient at building complex structures than we thought.

If that surprises you, imagine what else we’ll find as Webb keeps peeking deeper into space.
