Knowledge First: Don’t Confuse Culture with Islam | Belal Assaad
Muslims are commanded to “enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong”—but doing this correctly is an act of worship that requires deep knowledge, wisdom, and sensitivity. In a world of viral videos and instant opinions, careless words can harm more than help.
This lecture explains the Prophetic method for advising others so that we guide with mercy, not arrogance:
Knowledge First – Don’t advise or act until you truly understand the ruling and its nuances. Social-media hot takes often confuse culture with religion and can mislead millions.
Verify and Clarify – Before reacting to a clip or a scene, confirm the facts and understand the context. If you’re unsure, remain silent.
Prioritize the Essentials – Focus on the fundamentals of faith and obligatory acts before minor details. Welcome people warmly and correct gently and gradually.
Avoid Greater Harm – If giving advice will likely cause conflict, humiliation, or push someone away from Islam, delay or adjust your approach.
The Prophet ﷺ modeled this perfectly. He corrected privately, with empathy and timing—like when the young man asked about zina or the Bedouin who urinated in the mosque. He even postponed actions that were technically “right” to avoid turmoil, such as leaving the Ka‘bah in its pre-Islamic form for the sake of unity. Great scholars followed his example, focusing on hearts before rules.
Practical Takeaways:
• Distinguish Islam from culture and personal preferences.
• Prefer general reminders over targeting individuals.
• Build rapport and consider local norms, especially in Western contexts.
• Always ask: Would I accept this approach? Will it likely benefit?
Discover how to uphold this crucial duty with the balance of courage and compassion that Islam demands.
