Home made electric motor drives home made toy car

Lidmotor recently showed his simple electric with a Raisin Box as the main structure for the motor. He suggested I could make one to power one of my CD wheeled cars. I had a little think about it and this is the result. Not exactly what we discussed but a fun build anyway. If you have a question it is important to read this video description first because the answer may already be here.

Neodymium magnets
1 Bicycle spoke
2 Barbecue skewers
10 plastic beads
Plastic storage tray
4 wheels made from VHS cassette tape spools
Rubber bands
Small pulley
Styrofoam and cardboard disks to make a large pulley
9 volt battery
A very long length of enamelled wire, I didn't measure it and I don't know what thickness it was. I had recovered it from a transformer I disassembled.

You may want to try reversing one of the magnets so you have the same poles pointing outwards. When the current flows through the coil it creates a magnetic field that repels the magnet. As the magnet moves away, the axle turns and the painted section of the axle (bicycle spoke) insulates the electrical path stopping the current flowing. If this happens too soon, then the magnet may just swing back again instead of completing a complete spin. If it happens too late then the coil repels the next magnet as it tries to come round, pushing it backwards.
I explain this timing sequence in the other video notes.
This motor can work two ways depending on how you get the timing synchronized with the painted sections of the spoke.
1. If you have the magnets arranged North/South/North/South one end will be repelled and the other will be attracted.
2. If you have the magnets arranged North/South/South/North or South/North/North/South each will be repelled or attracted depending on which way your current is flowing.
Both 1 & 2 will work, it is just down to how you arrange the insulated portion of the spoke to stop the current flowing at the right time.
In both cases you may need to give the motor a little help to get it spinning or you may be lucky and it self starts. I show how difficult this is in the videos.
