This helps make my studio usable for an indoor working/teaching/gallery space.

I am using a 16"x20" stretched canvas. All the paints I use are acrylic paints mixed with additives to help them flow more easily. All my colors are stored and mixed in squeeze bottles for ease of use. I prime the canvas with a layer of white paint with a large silicone spatula. The wet layer of paint will allow whatever colors I add next to stay wet and workable longer, also to allow the paint to move more freely. The white also acts as a catalyst to encourage the creation of cells or patterns in the paint when the colors meet the white and are agitated, disturbed or stretched (when tilting is involved). I am using paint leftovers in a shallow container. I am recycling a good-sized lid from a package of lettuce. I add more colors to freshen the mix. I remove the paint with a child's plastic beach sand shovel and a small plastic kitchen scoop. I allow the paint to flow out the shovels flat front and deposit it wavy patterns onto my fresh wet primed canvas. I am using an edge catcher held against the side of the canvas to stop the paint from flowing off the canvas as I tilt it to spread the paint. I add more shovels of paint in wide stripey ribbons and tilt more. A small flat front spatula is used to pull through the colors pulling out spikey strands and colorful tendrils into the white paint. Using a propane torch gently all over the surface releases bubbles in the paint and causes the paint to react with the Floetrol I use in my pouring mix creating sporadic beautiful "cells".

My "pouring" mixture or "recipe" is simple and starts with 2 parts (estimated) GAC800 from Golden added into any acrylic paint color 8 parts (amounts are always estimated). This starts the mixing process. Mix the paint and GAC thoroughly. Next, I add my mixed Floetrol and (half) DecoArt pouring medium. (Shake it first every time!) The truth is, lately, that's my go-to. I add the same (or more) ounces as the first two ingredients and mix everything thoroughly. The consistency is usually medium "body" weight, but other weights are usable with minor adjustments.

To mix, if you use squeeze bottles as I do, add a marble and shake your paints every time before you use them. All my acrylic paints are mixed in advance and contained and stored in squeeze bottles. If you are not using squeeze bottles, I suggest using a container that has a lid. I have often used the 4oz size plastic deli containers, and the paint keeps for a long time in them, but you still will have to stir before using the mix again because the Floetrol and other flow agents will rise to the top between uses.  None of my acrylic paint has any added silicone. To create the pearlescent effects seen in most of my artworks, I use Golden's Iridescent pearl "Fine" added to colors. By "eye" until I am pleased with what I see.

Every day I learn new things. I will never stop experimenting, and I am happy to share what I discover with you.
