What Happened To Pokemon Z Version?

Pokemon Z Version was expected to come out after Pokemon X and Y, but we never got it. We got Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire a year after, and then 2 years after that we got Sun and Moon, with the 6th generation of Pokemon ending without a proper definitive edition or any backstory on Zygarde. So what happened to Pokemon Z Version?
