Underground Classic | One Tribe Ft Gem - What Have You Done | A Deep Dive Into My Record Collection
Tonight’s episode of my Deep Dive series goes straight back to 90/91 with an all-time underground rave anthem: One Tribe featuring Gem - What have you done.
This record carries 35 years of memories for me — from being friends with Gem the vocalist and her husband Roger Nell (Mr South from the legendary Eskimo Noise sound system) to experiencing the talent, vision, and pure genius of George Kelly, one of the first people I ever heard use the word jungle to describe the music we were playing.
The word “jungle” came from Jamaica — shout outs to “all the junglists” on mid-80s sound tapes, often referencing areas like Tivoli Gardens. George Kelly used that phrase in the very early 90s alongside to describe his music.
George and Diane (Gem) handed me this track back in the day, and it has never left my life or my sets. An anthem of Labrynth / 2000AD, Four Aces, 12 Dalston Lane, and the entire early 90s underground rave generation.
This is more than a record — it’s a moment in time.
