Today on site I’m diagnosing declining Swedish columnar aspens and replacing one that had fully failed.
Early signs included cupped leaves, dieback, and uneven growth—but the real issue became clear after digging in: the tree was planted too deep.
The root flare was completely buried, restricting oxygen exchange and disrupting the vascular system (xylem & phloem). Over time, this led to severe decline and internal decay.
Key reminder: always expose the root flare and avoid burying the trunk. Planting depth is critical for long-term tree health.
Installed corrections included proper flare exposure, improved mulch placement, and temporary wind support.
