The Dark Side of Behaviour Charts | Andrea Rippon | TEDxNorwichED
There are better ways to get respectful behaviour than using punishments and rewards. It may not be as quick but it will be long-lasting, psychologically healthier and your relationship will strengthen as a result. Instead of compliance and control, focus on consideration and influence. Increase emotional intelligence and help children work out problems instead of arguing about them. As they grow into adults, children will trust your power, respect your discipline and be influenced by your values. Andrea was born and brought up in India and Africa. After boarding school (which she hated), she went travelling for 2 years. She moved to Norwich in 1992. She did a work-based degree at UEA and, 6 years later, got a First Class Honours. Andrea finally decided what she wanted to be - aged 34. She was appointed Course Director of the Person Centred Counselling Skills programme at UEA. Strong relationships (with self and others) form the bedrock of productivity, wellbeing and change. Since 2000, Andrea has been working with organisations and individuals bringing them person centred relationship skills, emotional intelligence, listening & communication, mind-set (including NLP) and leadership skills. She is also a Certified Parenting and Youth Educator. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
