(New) BMW 135i N55 How to set Valvetronic to max lift without removing the valve cover

My valvetronic servo motor burned out. It's a little electronic motor that moves a worms gear that then in turn rotates the eccentric shaft at extremely high rates of speed. This little electronic motor operates at a very high amperage to handle spinning the eccentric shaft. The servo motor is heavily loaded by the pre-load the eccentric shaft puts on the valve springs to increase lift provided by the intake cam lobe. It seems that this load burns the electric motor out over time. When the valvetornic motor burns out there is no telling what position your valves are in (min lift or max lift). If stuck at minimum lift the car will not start. Minimum lift is something like .18" which is not enough to run the car. Idle is generally about .8" of lift from what I understand. Valvtronic can increase valve lift to as much as .38" (9.7mm on an N55).

In my case, my unit failed with the vales in the minimum position. This did not allow enough lift for the car to turn over and run. So, a BMW tech shared this little trick with me! The video above was a part where he was walking me through how to do this job. What we are doing here is basically manually setting the eccentric shaft to max lift. In this state, the car will run and drive just fine! Airflow is modulate via the throttle plate similar to how the N54 operates. I ran my car with valvetronic disabled for almost a year. A CEL was present which is annoying but my car was fine. Deleting valvetronic is actually a common thing on past generations of BMWs. In those previous generations the CEL could even be easily disabled. Maybe MHD will eventually map out the memory address for this switch on N55s.

You will be basically preforming these steps: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f3...

But, you will be doing it without the valve cover needing to come off!

1) remove the actuator plug
2) remove the gasket/bracket/seal
3) very carefully drill a hole on the driver side of the actuator between the actuator and the screw hole for the gasket. Start with the smallest possible drill size.
4) step the hole up in size until you can fit a 5mm (long) allen key through the hole. Be careful to keep the drill bit centered.
5) Pass the 5mm allen key through the hole you made and use it to manually turn the worm gear drive on the servo motor clockwise. This will in turn rotate the eccentric shaft and position the valves in the max lift position.

BE CAREFUL. The eccentric shaft basically just preloads the valve springs, so, at any time the force of the springs can spin (unwind) the eccentric shaft counterclockwise causing the shaft to slam against the physical stopper for min lift and snap the shaft. Do not let go of the allen key until you have reached max lift! At the point, the shaft should stay "locked" in that resting position (maybe 10+ 360* turns?).

6) dab some silicone into the hole you drilled to prevent a vacuum leak.
7) do NOT plug the sensor/valvetronic/servo/actuator (whatever you want to call it) back in. If you do, it will just get stuck at minimum lift again.
8) start the car
9) prepare funds to go back in and do the job right!
