→ Join me aboard one of the longest CRJ-700 flights in the world — covering a whopping 1,039 miles and blocked as long as 3 hours and 40 minutes! Now, you're probably wondering why this flight is significant enough for me to target it specifically and bend backwards to get on. Glad you asked. Because I want to showcase the importance of block times. In (almost) no case does this flight take 3 hours and 40 minutes — it would be a stretch to say it takes 3 hours. United (and other Skywest partners alike) block flights into Aspen for way more time than they take for one purpose — to ensure an on-time (or early) arrival. Aspen is known for airborne delays and constantly changing weather, so airlines "over-block" flights to compensate for these known obstacles. As you can see, the video is only a mere 2 and a half hours long — meaning this flight served its exact purpose of being over-blocked. We arrived a colossal 49 minutes AHEAD of schedule! Yup. You read that right. 49 minutes EARLY. *mind blown* We begin this full flight at Houston's gate B4, pushback and take a tour of IAH before lining up and waiting on runway 15R, then launching skyward into the thunderstorm-riddled skies above. After navigating through the storms, we climb to 36,000 feet and cruise over Texas, New Mexico and Colorado before descending into the soup that consumed Aspen, but still getting a few glimpses of the terrain below. We fly a picture-perfect downwind approach, then land ultra-smoothly on ASE's runway 15 and make a quick taxi to gate 4, where this full flight comes to an end.
