M. Night Shyamalan on ‘Servant’, His 40-Episode Plan, and Future Movies

With Servant Season 2 now streaming on AppleTV+ around the world, I recently got to speak with M. Night Shyamalan about the mysterious and creepy series. Created and written by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by Shyamalan – who also directs some episodes - Servant tells the story of parents Dorothy and Sean Turner (Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell) who've tragically lost a child. To cope, Dorothy takes care of an eerily lifelike doll, pretending it's her real baby. And when this coping mechanism extends as far as hiring a real-life nanny (Nell Tiger Free), things get...weird. In addition, Rupert Grint plays the brother of Ambrose’s character. While I would love to go into more detail about what happened in the first season and what you can expect in Season 2, Servant is one of those series where you want to know as little as possible as you watch.

During my interview with Shyamalan he talked about how he knows where Servant is going, how it will ultimately be four seasons with forty-episodes in total, how he casts the directors of each episode, what it was like giving notes to his daughter on the episode she directed, how the COVID shutdown impacted the scripts, and more. In addition, he revealed the TV series he’d like to guest write and direct and how he’s started writing his next movie.
