Kazan is the capital and largest city in the Rubublic of Tartarstan, Russia. Kazan lies at the confluence of the Volga and Kazanka Rivers in European Russia.

The original founding date of the city is subject to a number of versions and legends. By the 14th century, Kazan was an important commercial and political centre of the Goilden Horde.... In 1552, the city was destroyed by forces of the Principality of Moscow and almost immediately construction began of a new white-washed kremlin, in a deserted city...
With the Russian Revolution, Kazan became one of the centres of the Revolution in 1918 and the city saw fierce battles during the Civil War.
In 1920 a decree was signed on the formation of the Tartar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic with Kazan as its capital.
