He Wouldn't Sell the Domain. They Sent a Gun.

A man in Cedar Rapids, Iowa owned twelve characters - a web address: doitforstate.com. He wouldn't sell. So the man who wanted it wrote out a demand note with step-by-step GoDaddy transfer instructions, recruited a cousin with a gun, and sent him through the front door. Nobody hacked anything. The digital locks held. So the attack went physical.

This is the story of Rossi Adams, aka "Polo" - founder of State Snaps, a million-follower social-media brand built on the slogan "Do It For State." Between 2015 and 2017, Adams tried repeatedly to buy doitforstate.com. The owner said no. Adams sent a straw buyer the owner didn't know was connected to Adams. The owner named a price - $20,000 - and Adams still wouldn't pay. For two years, the answer stayed no. Then it turned dark: gun emojis in a text thread, a recruited cousin named Sherman Hopkins Jr. living in a homeless shelter, a written demand note of GoDaddy steps, a stolen 9mm Smith & Wesson out of Michigan.

On June 21, 2017, Adams dropped Hopkins behind the owner's house and drove to a nearby Walgreens to wait. Hopkins went in wearing a hat, dark sunglasses, and pantyhose over his head. He kicked in a bedroom door, dragged the owner to the home office, and - per the Justice Department's own words - "put the firearm against the victim's head and ordered him to follow the directions on the demand note." When the transfer form asked for details the note didn't cover, Hopkins answered with a pistol-whipping and a taser. The owner grabbed the gun. He took a bullet in the leg - then wrestled it free, shot Hopkins multiple times in the chest, and called 911. Both men survived. The domain never moved.

The next morning, Adams called GoDaddy several times asking where his domain was. Investigators lifted his palm print off the demand note. Hopkins pleaded guilty and got 20 years - the district's first Hobbs Act extortion case over an internet domain. A jury convicted Adams after about an hour of deliberation; he got 14 years. The 8th Circuit affirmed in 2021.

The lesson: a domain is a deed held at a registrar. The only way to move it is through the owner's account. Enable two-factor authentication, leave the transfer lock on, and know that a transfer made under duress can be disputed and reversed - but speed matters. And if a business dispute escalates from offers to threats, even emojis, screenshot it and report it early. The gun emojis came two years before the gun.
