Is Jamaica Really Doing Better Than Oil-Rich Guyana? (2025 Shocker)

Guyana is now the richest country in the Caribbean on paper, with a GDP per capita over US $32,000 thanks to oil. But Jamaica — with only US $13,000 GDP per capita — has lower unemployment (3.3% vs 10.2%) and a much lower poverty rate (8.2% vs ~37.5%).

So who’s really stronger?
👉 Guyana: Massive oil wealth, booming GDP, but high poverty and unemployment.
👉 Jamaica: Smaller GDP, but diversified, less poor, and one of the lowest jobless rates in the region.

Does GDP per capita really matter if people are still struggling? Or does Jamaica’s social progress prove it’s ahead in real life?
