Description

When we talk about vaginal health-related issues, one of the most common problems women face is vaginal itching. Often, a vaginal itch is accompanied by discomfort and pain. While these might be symptoms of an underlying disease or an infection, it is not always the case.

Causes of vaginal itching

Some of the common causes of vaginal itching are:

Irritants
Exposure to irritating chemicals can sometimes cause vaginal itching. Irritants trigger an allergic reaction which results in rashes in the vaginal area. A few known irritants are:
soap
sprays
topical contraceptives
creams
ointments
detergents
fabric softeners

Skin diseases
Skin diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis can result in vaginal itching.

Yeast infection
Yeast is a naturally-occurring fungus in the vagina and its growth is controlled by bacteria present in the vagina. If the yeast-bacteria balance is lost, mostly due to the use of antibiotics, there is an overgrowth of yeast. This overgrowth results in itching, burning or pain.

Bacterial vaginosis
In a similar fashion, the imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina causes bacterial vaginosis. Sometimes, this causes vaginal itch along with discharge.

Sexually transmitted diseases
STDs that result in vaginal itching include
chlamydia
genital warts
gonorrhea
genital herpes
trichomoniasis

Symptoms:

The symptoms may include abnormal growth, vaginal discharge, and pain while urinating.

Menopause
Fluctuation in estrogen levels may also cause vaginal itching in women experiencing menopause.

Conclusion:
It is common for women to get medication directly because of how common vaginal itch is. However, this can make it difficult to diagnose the actual problem causing the itch.

It is recommended that you speak with a gynecologist and get proper treatment.
