How to Set Up Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS for Gaming (Steam + Lutris + Proton)

In this video, I’ll walk you through getting Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS ready for gaming — including installing GPU drivers, enabling Proton, and setting up Lutris to play your full game library outside of Steam.

Pop!_OS by System76 is one of the best Linux distros for gamers, offering an up-to-date kernel, pre-bundled GPU drivers, and an easy software experience via the Pop Shop.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Install the Correct GPU Driver & Kernel
Pop!_OS offers two installer ISOs:
* One with the Nvidia proprietary driver
* One for AMD/Intel GPUs (open source Mesa drivers)

✅ The OS auto-installs the latest drivers during setup
✅ Kernel updates now roll out between releases — great for newer AMD hardware

If you stay up to date, no extra driver or kernel installs are needed post-install.

Step 2: Install Steam & Enable Proton
1. Open the Pop Shop
2. Install the Pop!_OS version of Steam (not the Flatpak version unless you know what you’re doing)
3. Launch Steam, apply updates, and log in

🔧 To enable Proton support:
* Go to: Steam \ Settings \ Steam Play
* Enable both:
✅ “Enable Steam Play for supported titles”
✅ “Enable Steam Play for all other titles”
* Choose Proton Experimental (recommended for best compatibility)

Once enabled, install and launch games like you would on Windows.

Step 3: Install Lutris for Non-Steam Games
You can install Lutris from the Pop Shop as well.
Once launched:
* Click a store under Sources (e.g., GOG, Epic)
* Sign in and sync your library
* Or click the ➕ icon \ “Search the Lutris website for installers” to find games manually

💡 You can also:
* Right-click a game \ Configure to access advanced tweaks for runners, launch commands, and system settings

🎮 Between Steam and Lutris, you’ll be able to run the majority of games on Linux — from AAA to retro, native to Windows-only.
