The Process of Advancing or Retarding your VE Style Injector Pump Timing.

I shot this on my phone a while ago when I was advancing my injection pump timing, so I thought I might upload it in case it helps someone - sorry for the crap quality. Changing your injection pump timing not a very hard process, but make sure you have an FSM before you start and you will need a special service tool (https://www.dencodiesel.com/products/ve-fuel-pump-timing-tool-denco-diesel) and dial gauge. I also cut and welded up a home made SST to gain access to a particularly difficult bolt.
I wouldn't recommend just jumping in and advancing your timing without doing a fair bit of research first. Yes, advancing can give you more power and better fuel economy, but it can also increase peak cylinder pressures and place extra strain on your engine. In my case, a FSM simply doesn't exist for a 14BT, so I have been going through a process of trying to identify the best timing to get the best out of the engine - basically, it's a balancing act. I've changed the timing at least 8 times now, and I've had the pump fully retarded (0.70) and as far advanced as 1.33. In my experience, retarded gives higher EGTs, a quieter engine, boost comes on faster and less smoke. Conversely, advanced timing gets lower EGTs, a noisier engine, slower boost response and more smoke. However, advancing also gives a bit more power... One way I've measured the increased power is by doing the same pull on a long hill. At 1.33 IP timing I can hold 100km/h up a fairly steep hill, while at 1.05 I could only get 92km/h. I also get slightly better fuel mileage when it's advanced.

I am not qualified in anyway shape or form to offer professional advice on this topic, so if you choose to follow my video it is at your own risk. I enjoy tinkering and learning how things work and if I stuff something up then that is on me and my own fault! I personally wouldn't do this job without a dial gauge and the special service tool as a small rotation of the pump equates to a large timing change. When I originally bought Frank, I had to do a complete rebuild and I suspect part of the issue was that the previous owner had attempted to advance the timing by hand/ear because the timing was set at 1.81 when I got him. Old school mechanics might be able to do this due to their experience, but I would only use the proper tools for this one.

Cheers!
