Borobudur - Temple of the Secret Aspect

Composed: 1987

Orchestral forces: 5.4.4.4 – 6.5.3.1 – 2hp, celeste, 5 perc, – 16.16.14.12.10.

This large scale musical work is based on the architectural design and narrative carvings of the immense Javanese monument.

Borobudur is scored for an orchestra of significant size with many percussion instruments. It was first performed by the RCM Symphony Orchestra conducted by Elgar Howarth as part of the Fast Forward Festival in the Royal College of Music, London in 1989.

This film uses photographs by others to direct the listener on a virtual tour of the great monument, as does the musical score. It is so designed as to give a faithful and artistic representation of the symbolism and architectural design of the building, which represents the mystic Mount Meru and teaches pilgrims about the life and deeds of The Buddha. All the photographs/images used in this film sequence were 'labeled for non commercial reuse'/'labeled for reuse' at the time of the film's creation and its uploading on You Tube. The composer wishes and intends to respect all issues of copyright, and has done his best to do so. All images can be easily located via Creative Commons.
