A US Navy Warship Sailed Into the Atlantic in 1814 and Never Came Back. | Vanished Ep. 29

Vanished — Episode 29

The USS Wasp was one of America's most celebrated warships during the War of 1812, winning multiple engagements against the British Royal Navy. In October 1814, after capturing a British merchant ship, the Wasp sailed into the Atlantic and was never seen or heard from again. Despite decades of searching, no wreckage, bodies, or explanation was ever found for the loss of all 140 crew members.

A 509-ton sloop-of-war fresh off a string of stunning victories over the British Royal Navy simply stopped existing mid-Atlantic, taking Master Commandant Johnston Blakeley and 140 sailors with her. This episode walks through the Wasp's legendary 1814 cruise, her final confirmed encounter with the Swedish brig Adonis, the theories of storm, foundering, unexploded magazine, or capture, and why she remains the US Navy's most haunting disappearance.
