Protesters boo government officials at anniversary vigil for Turkey quake

People in Turkey called for the resignation of the government, the local chief of police and the mayor of Hatay as they attended a vigil for 2023 earthquake victims.

Some protesters chanted 'Can anybody hear my voice?' as the health minister Fahrettin Koca spoke to the crowd in a main square of the city. The slogan comes from the yells heard from under the rubble as quake victims waited for days for help to arrive.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a statement on X that the pain of the loss from the earthquakes – 'the disaster of the century' – was as fresh now as it was a year ago.
