The loud and often shrill singing of Cicadas – the sound of New Zealand Summer.
Cicadas are common throughout the warmer parts of the world, particularly the tropics.

In New Zealand the Cicada fauna consists of 42 species and subspecies in five genera, although additional species are yet to be formally described. All are unique to New Zealand.
The largest is the Chorus Cicada (Amphipsalta Zelandica), with a wingspan of 8 centimetres.

In New Zealand, Cicadas are basically found everywhere, like urban areas, tall forest, scrub, grasslands, swamps, riverbeds and sand dunes.
Their distribution extends from the coast up to the mountains. This video was recorded in our backyard in a suburb of Auckland.

Cicadas are harmless (they don't sting or bite) and most, like the ones in our garden, don't even mind people around them, as long as you approach them gently.
