Why you should avoid HDMI for color critical workflow, especially with Pro Displays!
This video will explain why you should avoid using HDMI cable for color critical workflow. If you are using HDMI without any issues then please continue to do so. However, if you are having issues with HDMI especially in a color critical workflow setting then this video will tell you why. It has to do primarily with bandwidth conservation. HDMI is a standard designed to hook up set top boxes to your TV, this can be cable box, BluRay Player, DVD player, game consoles, etc. If you think about it these cable does not only carry the display, image, signal but it also carries sound, and if your signal source is HDR capable, it will carry that metadata as well. With this in mind there's a finite bandwidth in the cable and many times (note, not all the time), when you use this standard on a computer it has a tendency to truncate the RGB output range from the full 0-255 for each of the color channel to 16-235, therefore, neglecting all of the white and back with detail tonal range. Some video card and driver combination does have a work around or a setting for this, however, many computer does not, so if you are running into any display calibration or color issue, I would check this first.
