How to Identify Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs): Tips and Tricks

It can be hard to tell the difference between a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) and non-toxic algal blooms or other water quality concerns. This video provides some helpful identification tips and several image examples of HABs.

If you see an algal bloom and think it may be a HAB, please submit a Suspicious Algal Bloom Report Form. Links to the form can be found at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/77118.html. DEC recommends avoiding contact with any floating mats, scums, or discolored water.
