Why is the Mother of all bombs needed?
GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast – MOAB, better known as the Mother of all bombs – is a large-yield aerial bomb, developed by the US Air Force in the early 2000s. With a total mass of 9.8 tons (21,600 lb), it is capable of exploding with a yield of approximately 11 tons of TNT. This makes the MOAB the most powerful aerial bomb in service, not counting nuclear weapons.
Despite the cult status of the record holder, the bomb is a rather specific and expensive weapon. Therefore, its use, in most cases, is considered ineffective. As of 2023, MOAB has been used only once by the US Air Force in Afghanistan.
