Terry Gibbs with Regis Philbin: Lemon Drop
Lemon Drop: Composed by George Wallington
Musicians:
Terry Gibbs - vibes
Mike Melvoin - piano
Herb Ellis -guitar
Carrington Visor - flute
Monty Budwig - bass
Colin Bailey - drums
That Regis Philbin Show was Regis' first big national TV exposure. The show was syndicated by Westinghouse which had formerly produced the Steve Allen Show (1962-64), but when Steve decided not to do another season, Regis was called in. When they needed a band, Terry (a good friend of Steve's) was called in and he quickly put together this dynamite sextet you see here. This was also Terry's first big shot at leading a regular TV band and he not only backed up the likes of "who's who in jazz" guests (Ellington, Basie, Gillespie, Getz, Vaughan, McCrae, Christy, Reese, etc, etc.)--who had all been booked prior to Steve quitting the show--but got to play numbers like this video two or three times a week with the sextet. Terry also helped Regis interview the jazz artists. Although it had the mostly entertaining talk show format of the day, the show was a jazz lover's TV oasis for 20 weeks (100 shows) from October 1964 to March 1965. This clip is excerpted from the last show (#100, March 12, 1965) which is the only known surviving video. Read much more about Terry's days with Regis in Terry's award-winning biography:
